Beyond Twitter and Facebook: Understanding the Fediverse

A Strange Word for a Strange Idea

The first time I encountered the word Fediverse, I genuinely did not know what to make of it. It kept appearing in corners of the internet I was not quite expecting: in recommendation threads, in comments under posts about data privacy, in discussions from people who seemed to have had enough of the platforms everyone else was still using. The word itself felt like it came from another universe, which, as it turns out, is not entirely far from the truth.

AI Fatigue is Real

The Email I Did Not Ask For

It arrived in my inbox like any other piece of corporate communication: a cheerful announcement from my bank informing me that they were rolling out a new AI-powered assistant. Available around the clock, faster than any human agent, ready to answer every question I might ever have. The tone was breathlessly enthusiastic, as if the bank had just discovered fire.

I stared at the email for a moment. Then I felt something I have been feeling more and more often lately: a quiet, creeping exhaustion. Not at the technology itself, necessarily, but at the relentless pace at which it is being pushed into every corner of daily life, whether we want it there or not. There is a word for this feeling that is starting to circulate in conversations about technology: AI fatigue. It describes the weariness that sets in when a tool that was once exciting begins to feel ubiquitous, unavoidable, and at times, deeply unwelcome.

I "Built" My First Home NAS

When I first stumbled upon a YouTube video of a tech reviewer talking about NAS, I was curious to finally understand what that meant. I’ve been hearing about it for a long time and I knew it was something that you need to attach to your home network, but I never understood how it actually worked or how it is useful in today’s world.

All the first videos that I saw were from people describing their experience with their Synology NAS. That was useful because I understood that it’s basically something you attach to your home network so you can have some sort of shared hard drive that is accessible to everybody connected to the same network. The only issue is that the Synology system did feel a bit complicated and more oriented toward power users. Usually I look for services and products that are easy to understand and more focused on user experience, so I dug up a little bit on what the alternatives were and then I came across the Ugreen NAS DXP2800. It was way more modern than what was being offered by Synology, the operating system felt more user-friendly and it was also a bit cheaper. So even though Ugreen has not yet built a strong reputation around NAS, I still decided to try it out and I don’t regret it. I have to admit that one of the main reasons I finally decided not to go with Synology was because of the direction they’re taking with their latest models, limiting which HDDs you can actually install on them to only their proprietary ones, which are of course way more expensive than other reputable brands that are compatible with the vast majority of other devices. UGOS is just enough for an average user, giving you access to all the main applications that you may need, from a photos app to a music app to a media management app similar to Jellyfin or Plex. It does all you need out of the box. Since most of these apps have not been around for a long time, the experience on some of them still feels not as polished as services that focus solely on a specific thing, like Jellyfin does for content management. And that’s how I first started self-hosting.

The Breaking Point

Edward Snowden was born on June 21, 1983, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Before becoming the world’s most famous whistleblower, he worked as a CIA employee and NSA contractor, managing computer systems for Dell and later Booz Allen Hamilton. His top-secret security clearance gave him access to some of the most classified documents in the U.S. government, and he was earning a comfortable $200,000 annual salary when he made the decision that would change his life forever.

Nevertheless, this was about to be my second project in this area, so I started to feel a little more comfortable with myself and with the environment I knew I’d be facing. However, this time there was something different: it was about Black Light Theatre.

The Land of the Gods

In September 2021, I did my first Erasmus+ youth exchange in Greece. It was called “Active Citizenship through Mythology” and it took place in Pieria from September 4th to 12th.

The project was organized by EN.O Greece, and we stayed at the Grand Platon Hotel in Pieria. This region is known as “The Land of the Gods” because Mount Olympus is there.

Going to Greece in September was great because the weather was still really nice and summery. It was very enjoyable and I actually spent a good time there.

Digital Entrepreneurship Accelerator: Bansko, Bulgaria

So there I was, scrolling through Erasmus+ opportunities, when I spotted another project in Bulgaria. Did I hesitate? Not even for a second. I’d been there before and had a great time, plus the prices don’t hurt when you’re a student.

Bulgaria: The Sequel

Let me back up a bit. My first Bulgarian adventure was in Sofia, and it was kind of accidental. Me and some friends found these ridiculously cheap flights from Bari, the kind where you wonder if they forgot to add a zero to the price. We went for a weekend, expecting nothing special, and ended up having an absolute blast. The city was buzzing, the people were cool, and as Italians, we felt like millionaires with our euros. So when I saw this training course was happening in Bulgaria again, I was like “sign me up, I’m going back!”

When I first saw the call for participants for “Theatre: Breaking the Wall of Extremism,” my brain went into immediate conflict mode. On one hand: France. Beautiful, enchanting France, nestled in the Pyrenees mountains. On the other hand: theatre. A domain where I had approximately zero experience and maximum potential for embarrassment.

Spoiler alert: I went anyway. And I’m glad I did, even if my stomach didn’t always agree with me on the journey there.

As a result, the body is often ignored or silenced through stigma, taboo and socio-cultural conditioning. Youth in Contact was created to challenge this imbalance. Through Contact Improvisation and body-centered practices, the project aimed to reconnect participants with physical communication and embodied awareness.
